taro

Taro is a tropical root vegetable, but technically not a root, but a corm, which is an underground stem that stores food for the plant. It has a brown, hairy skin and a white or purple flesh with a nutty, sweet flavor. Taro corms and leaves are poisonous if eaten raw due to high levels of calcium oxalate, but can be safely consumed once cooked.

Examples:

  1. I like taro the best, inside my miso soup!
  2. My mom diced taro with coconut milk and made a creamy curry.
  3. I helped my dad grating raw taro and mixed it with potato to make crispy taro fritters.
