What's germination?

Germination is the process when a plant starts to grow from a seed.

When a seed is planted in the ground, it needs water, air, and warmth to begin the process of germination.

Let's look inside the seed.

The seed absorbs water and swells, and the seed coat softens and cracks. A seed coat is a protective layer that surrounds the seed outer layer of a seed. It's like a hard shell that protects the seed inside.

An embryo of a seed is like a tiny baby plant inside of a seed. This embryo contains the food that the plant needs to grow.

This food is stored in the form of tiny energy-filled molecules. As the plant grows, it will use this food to grow. When the conditions are right (such as having enough water and warmth), the seed coat will get soft.

Then a small root called a radicle starts to grow down into the soil. Radicle will be the first part that will come out from the seed to the ground. As the root grows, a stem with leaves will start to grow up towards the surface of the soil.

Germination is an important part of the life cycle of a plant. Once the seed has germinated, it will continue to grow until it becomes a mature plant. A mature plant is a plant that has grown to its full size like a tree or a flower. The plant will then eventually produce new seeds, which will start the process all over again.
