What is Rugby?
Rugby is a game where two teams compete on a large field, aiming to carry or kick the ball over the opponent's goal line to score points.
Number of Players
Usually, each team consists of 15 players.
A total of 30 players battle it out on the field!
Tool
- Ball: An oval-shaped, a bit tricky to handle and adds excitement to the game.
- Uniform: They wear special jerseys and shorts with team colors and numbers.
- Shoes: A special shoes called rugby boots with studs on the bottom for grip and safety on the field.
- Mouthguard: Soft, protective shields that players wear over their teeth.
Field
Rugby takes place on a large rectangular area called a "field."
At each end of the field, there are "goalposts" that look like giant "H" shapes.
Basic Rules
- Forward Pass: Unlike in American football, you can't throw the ball forward. It must always be passed backward or kicked forward to a teammate.
- Scrum: When there's a minor violation, like a knock-on (losing the ball forward), the teams come together in a scrum. This is where they push against each other to contest for the ball.
- Tackling: Tackling is how you stop an opponent. You can tackle the player who has the ball, but you must aim below the shoulders. High tackles are not allowed.
- Scoring: You can score a try (5 points) by touching the ball down in the opponent's try zone. You can also kick for a conversion (2 points) after a try or kick penalty goals (3 points) during play.
