Setsubun

Setsubun

Setsubun is a traditional Japanese event that marks the end of winter and the beginning of spring, being celebrated on February 3rd or 4th depending on the lunar calendar.

The word “Setsubun” means “division of seasons.”  There is a fun and festive activity that is enjoyed by people of all ages in Japan.  Mamemaki is the one and it means a bean-throwing ceremony to drive away evil spirits and bring good luck.

The phrase we shout while throwing beans: Oni wa soto! Fuku wa uchi! It means “Demons go away and Good luck come in!”  The beans used for Mamemaki are typically roasted soybeans.
