horseradish
Horseradish is a root vegetable. We eat the thick, white root, which has a chemical when you break the root down by grating or chopping it. That's why your eyes water and your nose runs – it's a chemical defense mechanism!
Examples:
- Horseradish is usually mixed with vinegar and cream to make a creamy sauce.
- Horseradish is so spicy that it can make your eyes water and nose run!
- My dad's favorite sandwich is roast beef with cheddar cheese and a smear of horseradish.
