"Battlements" refers to the raised structure with openings, such as crenellations or merlons, found along the top of a fortified wall or castle. These were designed to provide a defensive position for soldiers and to allow them to fire arrows or other weapons through the openings.

  1. The castle had high walls and imposing battlements that loomed over the surrounding countryside.
  2. The defenders of the city retreated to the safety of the castle's battlements as the enemy army approached.
  3. The tourists climbed to the top of the tower to get a better view of the battlements and the landscape beyond.
