calorie
noun
A calorie is a unit of measurement for energy. It tells us how much energy is in the food we eat and drink, kind of like how a ruler measures how long something is.
Just like we need energy to run, play, and grow, our bodies also need energy to function properly. We get this energy from the food we eat, and the amount of energy we get is measured in calories.
So, when we eat food, our bodies break it down and use the calories in the food as energy to help us move, think, and do all the things we do every day.
Example
- The apple has fewer calories than the chocolate bar.
- Running for 30 minutes burns a lot of calories.
- My mom checks the calorie count on the cereal box before buying it.
