candle
noun
A candle is an object made of wax or similar material that can be lit on fire. When a candle is lit, the flame melts the wax and the wick (which is usually made of cotton) draws the melted wax up to the flame, creating a steady flame that gives off light and heat.
Candles have been used for thousands of years to provide light when there is no electricity, to create a cozy atmosphere, and for religious or spiritual purposes.
Example
- The power went out, so we lit a candle to see in the dark.
- I love the smell of vanilla candles burning in my bedroom.
- We put a candle on top of the birthday cake and sang "Happy Birthday."
