Obon

Obon

Obon is a traditional Japanese Buddhist holiday that honors the spirit of ancestors. It is also known as the Festival of the Dead or Festival of Souls.
Obon is usually celebrated over three days in July or August, depending on the region.
The holiday is based on the belief that the spirits of ancestors return to us, living people. Families honor their ancestors by cleaning their graves, placing flowers, foods and sake on the graves. This is the way for families to connect with their ancestors and to remember their contributions to the family and to prepare for their arrival.

Bon Odori, a traditional Japanese dance, a simple performance, is often performed during Obon. It is the way for families to celebrate the spirits of their ancestors. The dance is often accompanied by traditional Japanese music and is a joyful and festive occasion.
